ABOUT FRESH BY DESIGN
Fresh By Design (FBD) was founded in 2004 to provide the Australasian and greater Asian Pacific aquaculture industry with high quality equipment, expertise, experience together with an extensive product range and reliable ongoing backup service. Our business group has grown to cover commercial and hobby aquaculture, waste water treatment, fish processing and the needs of educational facilities. FBD are industry and business professionals, passionate about aquaculture and building long term client relationships. We appreciate the necessity of high quality and efficient equipment to enable cost effective farming and processing designed for ease of operation and minimal stress.
Ben Pope (B.App.Sci Aquaculture)
Ben completed his Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture in 1999 at the University of Tasmania. Ben went on and gained experience in plumbing wholesale and retail in his local town of Bowral while planning and constructing a pilot/demonstration recirculating aquaculture facility in Moss Vale, NSW to grow Barramundi for the local market. By designing, building and operating a modern recirculating system along with his education, Ben has now taken over the operations of a long-standing family owned company ‘Serolo Pty Ltd’. With the support and cooperation of major suppliers, Ben has moved into aquaculture project management, system design and installation of commercial and research recirculating aquaculture facilities, manufacture and distribution of quality aquaculture products for fish and crustaceans to the Australian and Asia Pacific region. Ben has a passion for the aquaculture industry, which has in turn formed Australia’s newest one stop shop for quality aquaculture equipment and advice.
Lindsay Hopper (M.App.Sci.Aqua)
Lindsay grew up in a small NSW country town on a dairy farm before heading on a path via agricultural college where he would discover his life’s passion in aquaculture (that and sport of course). Since then Lindsay has been involved with the aquaculture industry for over 23 years including completion of a Masters of Applied Science in Aquaculture at the University of Tasmania. Lindsay’s position at FBD involves working closely with industry and research institutions, both nationally and internationally, including recirculation system design, project management, installations, engineering, sizing, applying and general aquatic consultancy as well as product development. His work covers virtually the entire industry, including most of the commercially grown species in Australia and overseas, hatchery, grow out (indoor and outdoor) and the live seafood holding and public aquarium fields. Lindsay’s position also involves the acquisition of products by working closely with our overseas manufacturers and suppliers. Lindsay represents Fresh By Design at conferences and trade shows on a national and international level and have forged strong business and personal relationships throughout the aquaculture world.
Ross Briggs (BSc.Hons)
Ross completed a B.Sc. (Hons) at the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University. His honour year was spent working in rural Thailand on the worlds largest Tilapia hatchery. After graduating he went to work with Landcatch UK in Scotland for 12 months. He then moved to sunny Australia worked at Tassal’s Russell Falls Hatchery 5 years. After some more travel Ross then went to Huon Aquaculture when construction was starting at their RAS at Lonnavale as the Assistant Hatchery Manager. He then moved within Huon to work as a Production Planner dealing with egg to harvest production plans and long range production infrastructure capacity and was also involved with Freshwater Projects including upgrading several of the Springfield hatcheries, planning and design of the Broodstock system, Meadowbank smolt system installation and initial site selections, scope, planning, contractor selection and design for Huons new Forest Home Hatchery. Ross spent the last 16 months working at a new start-up Bio-tech firm in Sydney called BioGill as the Divisional Manager for Aquaculture. This mainly involved dealing with customers, designing systems, setting out sales strategies, customer training. Also work on benchmarking the biofiltration aspects of the technology in relation to aquaculture – such as monitoring biofilm development, quantifying ammonia oxidation and also looking at options of off-flavour removal. He’s chosen to move back to Tasmania with his wife (Fiona) and two young children (Aflie and Rosie) and to work with Fresh by Design as we’ve worked together on a few projects and could see there were some real synergies in things we wanted to do going forward.
Lachlan Bassett (BSc. Marine Sci)
Lachlan grew up in northern NSW on a family owned cattle farm, before completing a bachelor degree in Marine Science. Combining his farming background and a passion for fish he pursued aquaculture. Lachlan has previously worked in aquaculture research with NSW Fisheries, before moving into Aquaculture Sales and Design. He has industry experience in finfish aquaculture including brood stock spawning and conditioning, live feed production, larval rearing and nursery/grow out. Lachlan’s position involves managing key customer accounts and he specialises in fish processing systems including Fish Pumps, Graders and Counters. He also plays a key role in new business development and marketing. His experience and skill set are a valuable addition to the Fresh By Design team.
Gareth comes from a small country farming community where he developed an interest in horticulture and where growing up on river frontage led to a pursuit of angling and interest in aquaculture. Gareth moved into the aquarium and aquaculture industry’s where he has focused his efforts and career development for the past 10 years. Gareth brings knowledge and experience in many areas including filtration system design for aquaculture and aquarium systems, lake aeration systems, aquaponics, probiotic and microbial products. His position at Fresh By Design involves product sales and technical support assisting customers with sizing filtration components and systems.
Kerri Dakin (B.Bus (Marketing) / B.Tourism)
Kerri completed a Bachelor in Business and Bachelor of Tourism in 2000 at Monash University. Kerri has extensive experience in project and event management, marketing and administration from both the public and private sectors. Kerri joined the team in 2014 and has developed her position to include administration, human resources and inventory management including procurement and logistics for Fresh By Design’s aquaculture product range and its major projects division. Kerri’s extensive knowledge and diverse skills are a valuable addition to the Fresh By Design Team. Her passion for business development ensures that Fresh By Design maintains its position as a leader in customer service and quality within the Aquaculture Industry
Ryan has a wealth of diverse experience that started with his upbringing in a family of builders on fruit farm in northern NSW. From there Ryan has worked in retail management, occupational health and safety and over 12 years in the aquaculture and plastic industry. This experience provides a sound background to manage the manufacturing at FBD. Ryan’s skills in plastics, metal and composite material design and fabrication provide the ability for in-house production of all kinds. Ryan has been involved in many aquaculture recirculation system installations both locally in Australia and overseas. Ryan’s position involves aspects from project management, design, construction, planning, logistics and development of new and innovative products to the aquaculture industry.
