Fresh By Design (FBD) was founded in 2004 to provide the Australian and New Zealand aquaculture industries with high quality equipment, expertise, experience together with an extensive product range and reliable ongoing backup service. Our business group has grown to cover commercial aquaculture, waste water treatment, fish processing and the needs of educational facilities. FBD are industry and business professionals, passionate about aquaculture and building long term client relationships. We appreciate the necessity of high quality and efficient equipment to enable cost effective farming and processing designed for ease of operation and minimal stress.
Ben Pope – Managing Director
Ben completed his Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture in 1999 at the University of Tasmania. Ben went on and gained experience in plumbing wholesale and retail in his local town of Bowral while planning and constructing a pilot/demonstration recirculating aquaculture facility in Moss Vale, NSW to grow Barramundi for the local market. By designing, building and operating a modern recirculating system along with his education, Ben has now taken over the operations of a long-standing family owned company ‘Serolo Pty Ltd’. With the support and cooperation of major suppliers, Ben has moved into aquaculture project management, system design and installation of commercial and research recirculating aquaculture facilities, manufacture and distribution of quality aquaculture products for fish and crustaceans to the Australian and Asia Pacific region. Ben has a passion for the aquaculture industry, which has in turn formed one of Australia’s leading one stop shop for quality aquaculture equipment and advice.
Ross Briggs – Senior Project Manager
Ross completed a B.Sc. (Hons) at the Institute of Aquaculture at Stirling University. His honour year was spent working in rural Thailand on the worlds largest Tilapia hatchery. After graduating he went to work with Landcatch UK in Scotland for 12 months. He then moved to sunny Australia worked at Tassal’s Russell Falls Hatchery 5 years. After some more travel Ross then went to Huon Aquaculture when construction was starting at their RAS at Lonnavale as the Assistant Hatchery Manager. He then moved within Huon to work as a Production Planner dealing with egg to harvest production plans and long range production infrastructure capacity and was also involved with Freshwater Projects including upgrading several of the Springfield hatcheries, planning and design of the Broodstock system, Meadowbank smolt system installation and initial site selections, scope, planning, contractor selection and design for Huons new Forest Home Hatchery. Ross spent the last 16 months working at a new start-up Bio-tech firm in Sydney called BioGill as the Divisional Manager for Aquaculture. This mainly involved dealing with customers, designing systems, setting out sales strategies, customer training. Also work on benchmarking the biofiltration aspects of the technology in relation to aquaculture – such as monitoring biofilm development, quantifying ammonia oxidation and also looking at options of off-flavour removal. He’s chosen to move back to Tasmania with his wife (Fiona) and two young children (Aflie and Rosie) and to work with Fresh by Design as we’ve worked together on a few projects and could see there were some real synergies in things we wanted to do going forward.
Lachlan Bassett – Sales Manager
Lachlan grew up in Inverell on a family owned cattle farm before completing a bachelor degree in Marine Science. Combining his farming background and a passion for fish he pursued aquaculture. Lachlan has previously worked in aquaculture research with NSW Fisheries before moving into Aquaculture Sales and Design. He has industry experience in finfish aquaculture including broodstock spawning and conditioning, live feed production, larval rearing and nursery/grow out. As Sales Manager, Lachlan leads the Sales Team and Product Sales for Fresh By Design with a strong focus on customer service. He also plays a key role in new business development and marketing.
Ryan Burniston – Sales Officer
Ryan completed his Bachelor of Applied Aquaculture at Melbourne Polytechnic in 2008. He has worked throughout Victoria’s Trout and Salmon industry and has been managing fish farms for the past 10 years, of which the last 5 years as farm manager for an RAS operation with Barramundi in Melbourne. He has extensive experience with flow through, ponds and RAS including species such as Silver Perch, Murray Cod, Short Fin Eel and Barramundi. Ryan is also well versed in the live trade market including finfish and high value crustaceans such as Rock Lobster and Abalone. His position at Fresh By Design involves product sales and assisting customers with sizing filtration and system components as well as system installs.
Stephen Ley – Project Manager
Having completed a Bachelor of Science in Aquaculture at the University of Tasmania, Stephen quickly moved in to the aquaculture commercial sector and has been feeding his passion for the industry ever since. Over the course of a twenty year plus career in the aquaculture industry, Stephen has been involved in many aspects of the industry and has gained experience with species of both tropical and temperate environments from Hobart to the Torres Strait in Far North Queensland. Stephen has had valuable experience across a broad range of operations including shellfish hatcheries and algae culture, finfish and shellfish nurseries commercial grow-out, seafood processors and institutional R&D. Some of the species that Stephen has had proven culture and husbandry experience with includes Atlantic salmon, barramundi, prawns, pearl oysters, abalone and rock lobsters. Over this time, Stephen’s skills and passion has directed him towards areas of a more technical nature and for a few years he operated a small business assisting aquaculture and seafood business’ concentrating on areas of ozone and oxygen control as well as consultancy and servicing. These combined skills and experience over a large field of aquaculture and related areas appeared to be an excellent fit for Fresh By Design and at the start of 2018 Stephen left the University of Tasmania (IMAS) to join the project team at Fresh By Design to assist in all aspects of project management.
Tom Harrison – Project Officer
Tom’s interest with aquatic life systems started at a young age, his passion then let him to pursue a Bachelor of Science, Double majoring in Aquaculture Science and Technology, and Marine Biology from James Cook University. After graduating, Tom secured a position working in Thailand at Blue Aqua International Group. His main role was to help develop and design research facilities in Singapore to study the potential of key aquaculture species such as Kuruma prawns, tropical polychaetes and octopus. During his time in South East Asia, Tom represented the company at various WAS shows and used his experience and knowledge of aquaculture systems to develop marketing tools and train employees. His industry experience in aquaculture includes, Prawn larvae production, live feed cultures, pond-based aquaculture and species such as Tiger prawn, Kuruma shimp and White leg shrimp. Tom is based in our Hobart office as part of FBD’s expanding Project Team.
