Project Overview

In August 2022 Fresh By Design completed the installation of a range of aquaculture systems as part of the Deakin University Queenscliff Marine Sciences Centre upgrade. The systems were designed to accommodate a large variety of academic research and experimental designs, and include various tank sizes with the option to operate as flow-through or recirculating systems via portable filtration units. Fresh By Design supplied and installed two 15,000 L stock holding systems, three independent recirculated systems each with four 500 L tanks, four mesocosm tank systems, five custom-built aquarium racks and seven bunded bench systems, and seven mobile filtration units. All systems were designed in close collaboration with research staff at the University.

Solution

2 x 15,000 L stock holding systems, each with a custom-built FBD Filter Sump with MBBR and bag filters, Pentair Aquatic Eco-Systems 150 W UV sterilisers, aeration, MAT Filtration Technologies PS500 protein skimmers and Waterco recirculating pumps. 3 x independent recirculated systems, each with 4 x 500 L Polymaster tanks, custom FBD Filter Sump with MBBR and bag filters, Pentair 80 W UV sterilisers, aeration, MAT PS300 protein skimmers and Waterco / UNO mag-drive pumps. 4 x mesocosm tank systems with 800 L fibreglass tanks and large glass viewing windows. 5 x custom-built aquarium racks and 7 x bunded bench systems with acrylic tanks of various sizes and Fluval Marine LED lighting with Bluetooth app control. All tank systems can run flow-through or recirculating via 7 x mobile filtration units, each with a bespoke acrylic FBD Filter sump with bag filters, MBBR and custom Deakin University logo, Pentair 40 W UV steriliser, Teco TK2000 chiller, Uno mag-drive pump and Schego 1200 W immersion heater.

The Fresh By Design team have a reputation that precedes them – they were a pleasure to work with as we embarked on a series of upgrades to our aging research infrastructure at the Deakin University Queenscliff Marine Science Centre. Fresh By Design’s ability to take our initial concepts, apply their wide-ranging expertise in aquaculture system design, and develop a series of bespoke research aquaria systems that meet a diverse array of research needs was truly exceptional
