Cawthron Institute Finfish Research Centre – Nelson, New Zealand
Fresh By Design is proud to announce the completion of the one of the world’s largest, purpose built, Chinook Salmon research facilities for Cawthron Institute’s new Finfish Research Centre (FRC) in Nelson, New Zealand.
The FRC has 6 individual systems – four large feed trial systems and two smaller physiology systems that can be run on either freshwater or seawater. The facility was designed to conduct Chinook Salmon research from fry through to harvest size, however it can also be used for multiple fish species due to the flexibility in design.
Each of the individual systems have 8000L or 2500L litre bespoke fibreglass tanks with dual drains and swirl separators for waste collection and analysis. The water is mechanically filtered through a Faivre Drum Filter into an MBBR Bio-Filter before cascading over a degasser into a level-sensor controlled sump. Return water to the tanks is supplied via VSD-driven Waterco Pumps, Ultra Aqua UVs and FBD Oxygen Cones with FBD automatic dosing and emergency systems.
Looping off the sumps are RK2 Foam Fractionators with ClearWater Tech Ozone Generators and Oasis Heat Pumps. Supporting services for incoming water treatment system we supplied included storage tanks, Waterco Media Filters, Ultra Aqua UVs, FSI Bag Filters and Grundfos demand pumps. Low Pressure (LPSA) Oxymat Oxygen Generators were also included for onsite oxygen supply to the FRC and the existing systems.
The stocking and feeding rates designed into the systems, will allow applied research under a range of commercial, variable conditions and have significantly increased the capacity of Cawthron to carry out finfish research. This project for Fresh By Design is the culmination of many years of working with Cawthron and includes supplying a smaller existing Salmon Research system and a Scampi research system.

Seafarms – Prawn Broodstock Maturation System – Innisfail, QLD
FBD completed the design, supply and installation for Seafarm’s new Prawn Broodstock system at their hatchery outside of Innisfail, Queensland. This system is to further the research on prawn broodstock and domestication to reduce the need for wild caught stock. This was a joint project between Seafarms and James Cook University. The system comprised of 16 x 10,000L tanks run by two independent filtration systems. Each tank uses airlifts to increase tank water movement and waste removal. The system includes Faivre Drum Filters, RK2 Fractionators, MBBR Bio-Filters, Pentair UV Sterilizers and Sparus Pumps with Constant Flow Technology and Oasis Heat Pumps.
The research conducted at this facility will benefit the entire prawn industry and we are grateful we could be involved with this project.

King Reef Seafoods (Sealord) – Barramundi Nursery RAS – Cowley, QLD
This project was a renovation and upgrade of a unused former nursery. The facility overhaul included a Faivre Drum Filter, MBBR, AST Bead Filter, RK2 Freshwater Fractionator and Ozone Generator, PCI VSA Oxygen Generator, Grundfos pumps and Pentair UV Sterilisers. The system is controlled and monitored using the OxyGuard Pacific, with real time monitoring and alarming of DO in every tank and also pH, ORP and Conductivity in the sump. An Aqua-life Fish Pump and Faivre Grader and Counters made up the fish handling and grading system. The system is designed for on-growing of fry to supplement existing production. It will also improve the quality and quantity of fingerlings to their existing farm, as well as ensuring continuity of supply throughout the year.
Huon Aquaculture – Water Intake Filtration and Oxygen Injection – Millybrook, TAS
FBD completed a project including design, installation and equipment supply for the Millybrook flow through farm. This was a site upgraded to include improved water filtration, upgrade oxygen systems, full design of pipework layout and supply of equipment. We supplied FBD Oxygen Cones, FaivreDrum Filter, Grundfos supply pumps and VSD’s. Project collaborators included BCElectrical, Cromartys and Global Poly Contract
Cray8 Fisheries – Lobster Holding Facility – TeAnau New Zealand.
Design and supply of equipment upgrade for a Lobster purging and live holding prior to live export to Asia.
Tassal – Salmon Egg Incubation RAS – Ranelagh, TAS
FBD commissioned an Atlantic Salmon incubation system for TASSAL at their Rookwood Road Hatchery. This was to improve the quality and capacity over their existing system. FBDs role included design of the filtration system using existing building footprint and existing Comphatch layout, along with supply and installation of equipment. System included Waterco media filters, carbon, zeolite, Pentair UV sterilisers, RK2 Freshwater Fractionator and circulation pumps, Grundfos main supply pumps, Degree C chilling system, FBD degassing unit, backup diesel pumps.
Tasmanian Eel Exporters – Eel Grow Out RAS – Bagdad, TAS
The Finlayson family engaged FBD to build a recirculating aquaculture system to grow-on eels captured in the wild.
The RAS includes 20 x 9000L Polymaster Tanks with a filtration system designed around a peak feeding rate of 525 kg/day. Water is pumped into the tanks through 4 x 960watt Pentair U.V. Sterilizers, then through an oxygen cone (FBD Model 1) on each tank to maintain stocking densities up to 150kg/m3. Water leaving the tanks is gravity-fed via floor channeling, to a Faivre 16/120 Drum Filter fitted with 36µm screens, and then through a Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR) and bio block degassing unit into the sump. Additional filtration is provided by an RK600PE Freshwater Fractionator, to which ozone (RK2, 15g/hr) is added to enhance water quality control. Further control over dissolved solids (TDS) is ensured by the inclusion of an AST (Aquaculture System Technologies) Propeller-wash Bead Filter, with an automatic backwash control system. Australian designed and manufactured Turbine pumps were chosen for their energy efficiency, serviceability and reliability. They also negate any concerns over nitrogen super-saturation given their submersed design. Feed is delivered automatically via an Arvo-Tec feeding system over 24 hours at 1-3% of biomass per day.
