Project Overview

Fresh By Design designed, supplied, installed and commissioned the recirculating life support system for the platypus pools in Taronga Zoo Sydney’s Upper Australia Precinct. FBD delivered a single packaged skid serving three linked exhibit pools of approximately 8,000 litres total, turning the full volume over twice an hour. The skid combines 100 micron mechanical filtration, a custom moving bed biofilter, a protein skimmer, carbon filtration, UV disinfection and a heat pump holding the water between 15 and 25 degrees, all under a PLC control board with pH, temperature and level monitoring and alarms. FBD installed the pool pipework ahead of tank construction, then commissioned the system and trained keeper staff. The exhibit was handed over in June 2023 and holds two adult platypus alongside purple-spotted gudgeon and yabbies.
