Project Overview

Before salmon are transported to the sea cages, each group must be challenged to ensure they are biologically ready for the rapid change from freshwater to saltwater – the process known as smoltification. FBD built and tested two smolt challenge systems in its workshop, packed them up and shipped them to Tasmania for a quick install by the FBD Tasmania-based crew. Each system is built around 2 x 1,000 L poly tanks with an FBD-crafted filter sump using bags for mechanical filtration, followed by a moving bed biofilter and then a pumping sump, a chiller on a loop for temperature control, and return flow through a 50 W UV back to the tanks. Custom tank lids were also supplied. FBD supplies these same systems to schools and hobbyists.

Challenge

Before salmon are transported to sea cages, each group must be challenged to confirm it is biologically ready for the rapid change from freshwater to saltwater, which requires small controlled systems with reliable temperature and water quality control.

Solution

Two identical challenge systems were built and tested in the FBD workshop then shipped to Tasmania for installation by the local FBD crew. Each system comprises 2 x 1,000 L poly tanks, an FBD filter sump using bag filters for mechanical filtration followed by a moving bed biofilter and a pumping sump, a chiller on a loop for temperature control, a 50 W UV on the return line and custom tank lids.

System Size

2 x systems, each with 2 x 1,000 L poly tanks; 50 W UV

Key Equipment

  • FBD filter sump with bag mechanical filtration
  • Moving bed biofilter (MBBR)
  • Pumping sump
  • Chiller on temperature control loop
  • 50 W UV steriliser
  • Custom tank lids
