Water falling through a plain orifice tends to form a vortex spiral. Once that happens the distribution pattern below the plate changes with head height, and the tower stops stripping evenly across its plan area. The Crown nozzle places a vortex crown over the orifice to break up that spiral, so the pattern holds regardless of head.
The crown also sits between the flow and the orifice, shielding it from debris carried with the water. The body is telescoping, with lock-in tabs that engage as the nozzle is pushed into the deck plate, and the orifice inserts are interchangeable within the same body.
How to size
Crown nozzles are sized on water flow. Work out the total flow going onto the distribution plate, then divide it by the flow of one nozzle at your deck head to get the number of nozzles.
Number of nozzles = total flow (L/min) ÷ flow per nozzle (L/min)
Worked example: 100 L/min onto the plate, using the 1/2 in. orifice at 9 L/min per nozzle, needs 100 ÷ 9 = 12 nozzles. Step up an orifice size to use fewer nozzles, or down to spread the same flow across more.
Flow per nozzle rises with deck head, so the figures below are quoted at 150 mm (6 in.), the middle of the manufacturer’s published curve. Send us your total flow and deck head and we will confirm the orifice and the nozzle count.
