Q: How does the self-cleaning actually work?

A squeegee sweeps the sidewall and floor and deposits debris into a trough running from the tank centre to the sidewall, where it is flushed out through the sediment purge valve.

Q: Why does the drain arrangement matter so much?

Self-cleaning only works if swept solids reach the sediment trap and purge valve, so the centre-to-wall trough and its outlet are the part of the tank that determines performance.

Once or twice a day is the recommended flushing frequency.
