Q: Why is a UV flow rate useless without a dose and a UVT?

The same vessel treats very different flows depending on the dose you need and how clear the water is — every flow figure on this page is stated with the dose in mJ/cm² and the %UVT it was rated at.

Q: What is UVT and how do I find mine?

UVT is the fraction of 254 nm light passing through a 10 mm water sample; these ratings assume 90% UVT, so measure yours with a UVT meter before sizing because a lower UVT means a lower delivered dose.

Q: What UV dose do I actually need?

It depends entirely on the target organism — general bacterial control is usually specified around 30 mJ/cm², while resistant protozoan and parasite stages need far higher doses, so tell us the organism and we will size to it rather than guessing.

Q: What lamp type is fitted and how long does it last?

American-made low-pressure high-output (LPHO) lamps rated for 9,000 hours of continuous operation and still around 80% efficient at that point — replace annually on continuous duty.

Q: Do I need a flowmeter as well?

Yes — the dose only holds if the flow stays at or below the rated figure, so we recommend a flowmeter on every UV installation so you can see when the flow has crept up.

Q: Should I pre-filter ahead of the UV?

Yes — organisms sheltering inside particles need a much higher dose than free-swimming ones, so fit the UV downstream of mechanical filtration.

Size on dose, not wattage: choose the model whose flow at your target dose exceeds your design flow. 30 mJ/cm² covers general bacterial control; resistant parasite stages need far more, and at 180 mJ/cm² the same vessel treats roughly a sixth of the flow. Measure your %UVT first — a low UVT cuts the delivered dose no matter which model you fit.
