Q: How do I size a 240 W or 300 W multilamp UV steriliser?

Start with the dose the target organism needs, not the flow rate. The table above gives each model at two doses: 30 mJ/cm² for bacteria, and 180 mJ/cm² for the more resistant protozoan parasites and fish viruses. The 300 W passes 39,480 LPH at the lower dose and 6,540 LPH at the higher one — same unit, same water, six times the difference. Then check UV transmittance, because those figures hold at 90% UVT and a system carrying colour, fine solids or dissolved organics will sit lower. Worked through: a 60 m³ system at one turnover per hour needs 60,000 LPH, which is past the 300 W on a single pass even at a bacterial dose. The options are two units in parallel, a slower turnover through the steriliser, or lifting UVT with better mechanical filtration ahead of it. Q: Why does the flow drop so far at the higher dose?

UV dose is the product of intensity and contact time. Holding the same lamp output, the only way to deliver a higher dose is to slow the water down, so the flow has to fall in proportion. Bacteria are inactivated at relatively low doses. Protozoan parasites and several fish viruses need several times more, which is why a steriliser sized on a bacterial figure will not control a parasite problem. Decide the target organism before the model.

Q: Is the 240 W the same as two 120 W sterilisers?

Not quite. The 240 W is a multilamp unit — two 120 W lamps running inside a single vessel on one set of 80 mm connections, rather than two separate sterilisers plumbed in parallel. It takes less space, needs one inlet and one outlet, and single-end access means each lamp and quartz sleeve can be drawn out without stripping the vessel. Lamps and quartz sleeves are shared with the single-lamp 120 W and 150 W units, so spares carry across.

Size on dose, not wattage. At 30 mJ/cm² the 300 W passes 39,480 LPH; at 180 mJ/cm² the same unit passes 6,540 LPH — six times the difference on identical water, because the dose is set by the organism you are targeting. Bacteria sit at the low end, protozoan parasites and the more resistant fish viruses at the high end. Measure your %UVT as well: these figures hold at 90% UVT, and a recirculating system carrying colour, fine solids or dissolved organics can sit at 80% or lower, which cuts the delivered dose no matter which model is fitted.
