UltraAqua UV Quartz Sleeves & O-rings

A UV quartz sleeve houses the lamp inside the reactor, isolating it from the water while transmitting UV-C into the flow around it. These are the replacement sleeves for UltraAqua MR-series and open channel UV systems, in the same high-purity fused quartz supplied from the factory, to suit 75W, 220W, 350W and 440W lamps. The sleeve O-rings that seal them are listed here as well.

Keeping a UV quartz sleeve clean

Fouling rate is governed by water chemistry rather than running hours. Carbonate scale, iron and organic film accumulate on the quartz, and hardness, iron content, organic load and temperature all accelerate the process. Two identical systems on different water sources will need very different service intervals.

Inspect the sleeves after three months of operation and set your interval from what you find. Clean intake water may only warrant attention twice a year, while bore water carrying iron can require monthly cleaning.

Use the sponge supplied with the unit for general film, and a citric acid solution with a soft cloth for mineral scale. Avoid abrasives. Scouring pads, steel wool and scrapers will mark the quartz, and a scratched sleeve scatters UV rather than transmitting it into the water. Handle sleeves by the ends and wear gloves, as skin oil bakes onto quartz under UV exposure.

When to replace one

A clean, unscratched sleeve has no defined service life and will outlast several sets of lamps. Replace it when fouling no longer responds to cleaning, when scratching becomes visible, or immediately if the sleeve is chipped or cracked. A crack will eventually flood the lamp chamber, taking the lamp and often the driver with it. As a working limit, replace inside 24,000 hours regardless of appearance.

Fit new O-rings whenever a sleeve is removed. If you are unsure which sleeve your system takes, send us the serial number from the control cabinet and we will confirm it.

Older units — L1250 series

At 220W and 440W the sleeve length changed with the unit generation. Current units take the L1290 sleeve at 220W and the L1300 WT20 at 440W. Earlier units take the shorter L1250 series, and those are listed below the current versions. Both are held in stock.

If you are unsure which series your unit takes, measure the sleeve you are replacing or send us the UV ID from the control cabinet and we will confirm it.

Sleeve O-rings

The O-rings seal the quartz sleeve against the reactor body. They perish with age and UV exposure whether or not the system is running, and a re-used O-ring is the most common cause of a weeping seal following a service. Fit new ones whenever a sleeve is removed rather than refitting the originals.

Two sizes cover the range: one to suit 220W and 350W sleeves, and one for 440W. Keeping a spare set on the shelf avoids holding up a sleeve change while a delivery arrives.
